Depression is way more than just feeling sad.
There are seven different emotions that you may feel when depressed. Research shows that identifying precisely what you’re feeling can help you feel better. It can even reduce the length and intensity of the episode.
What are the Emotions Behind Depression?
- Anxiety
- Guilt
- Hopelessness
- Irritability
- Loneliness
- Sadness
- Worthlessness
Do any of these surprise you?
While I knew that people with depression often have anxiety, I didn’t realize that it could be a symptom as well. And finding out that loneliness was also a part explained a lot for me.
How Does Knowing This Help?
Sometimes when you feel off in some way, being able to identify it helps.
There are tools, called feelings charts, for both adults and children that you can find online or purchase. They come in different forms, such as lists, wheels, or charts that you fill in. There are even apps for your phone.
The best way to help your depression is by learning to identify the emotions that you are feeling. Develop a habit of checking in with yourself a few times a day, even when you’re feeling good. Then identify your feelings.
It also helps to express how you feel, either by talking with someone or journaling. You could use art to let your emotions out if you’re creative.
Practicing mindfulness — just being aware of the present moment — can also help with depression and identifying how you feel.
Learn to dig a little deeper into your emotions and recognize them for what they are. It’s worth the time.
